Fes Morocco

History pours out of every inch of Fes, as this medieval city is filled with old architecture, cultural attractions, and winding alleys that lead to massive squares that still contain that old-time charm. While this area hasn’t been as popular as it once was for many years, more people are now choosing Fes as the perfect place for their next vacation.

Top things to see and visit in Fes

1- Visit the Medina

This medina is the oldest one in North Africa, as well as the largest, and it is now considered an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It can be easy to get lost within the maze of streets, alleys, and buildings, so everyone should keep an eye on how they wandered to each location that they are going. Visitors also need to understand that a few of the gates to the medina close at seven in the evening every night, and those closures can make it even more difficult for anyone to get out without getting extremely lost.

2-Visit the Kairaouine Mosque

This mosque happens to be the second largest mosque within Morocco and it is also the oldest university that is still in use in the entire world. The inside of the mosque has marble floors and there are fountains everywhere. While all those things are wonderful, there is nothing better than watching everyone who enters as they pray.

3- Visit the Medersa Bou Inania

Normally only Muslims can enter the religious buildings in Fez, but the Medersa Bou Inania is one of the exceptions. This building was constructed during the 14th century and until the 1960s it was used as a theological school. Most people visit to see the fabulous architecture, while others want to learn about the history that has been made inside the walls.

4- Visit the Chouara Tannery

There are plenty of tanneries in Fez, as well as other areas of Morocco, but the Chouara Tannery is one of the best. Everyone will want to be prepared for the horrendous odors that permeate the air inside the tanneries and it is often recommended that visitors bring mints with them to avoid being charged for one by the locals. The animal hides that haven’t been touched yet will be piled up in one area, and that will be where the worst odor can be found. Once visitors reach the dying stations, they will forget about the smell a little bit and focus on the art of dying the animal skins. After watching the process, visitors can go to the on-site leather shop to look at all the leather goods and possibly make a purchase.

5- Visit Mellah

Mellah is the Jewish Quarter in Fez and it was founded during the 8th century. Thousands of Jewish people lived within this area until cultural and religious differences occurred between them and the rest of the locals. Once that happened, many of the people who lived there were either banished from the area or simply left on their own. While many buildings were constructed there many years ago, a lot were destroyed over time. Thankfully, restoration is being completed on this area, so visitors will be able to experience it for themselves. When people are visiting, they should shop at the gold souk or one of the numerous antique shops.

6- Check Out the Golden Gates at the Royal Palace

No one can enter the Royal Palace, but that doesn’t stop hundreds of people from arriving at the Golden Gates each day. There are seven gates in all and each one offers photogenic opportunities for everyone.
